Best Class I Division 1 & 2 tablets in 2026

In North America, hazardous locations are classified by Class and Division: Class I covers flammable gases and vapors, Division 1 means they are likely to be present in normal operation, and Division 2 means they are present only in abnormal conditions. A tablet used there must be approved or listed for the location under the NEC or CEC, so an ATEX or IECEx certificate alone is not enough. Beyond the listing, what matters is the gas groups, the temperature code and the work a tablet lets your team do. These are our picks for each kind of Division 1 and 2 work, from multi-region sites and long shifts to Windows software, scanning and iPad fleets.

No tablet we list has a wider North American listing than the Tab-Ex 05 DZ1, so it is our first choice for teams that move between Division 1 and Division 2 locations or run sites that also have Zone-classified areas. The SGS certificate (SGSNA/25/CA/00003X) covers Class I Division 1 Groups A, B, C and D at T6, Class II Division 1 Groups E, F and G at T80 °C, Class III at T80 °C, and Class I Zone 1 AEx db ia IIC T6 Gb with Zone 21 Group IIIC. Because Division 1 equipment can also be used in Division 2, one flameproof (Ex db ia) tablet covers both, and T6 (85 °C) also covers gases that ignite below the 135 °C limit of T4.

In use it is an 8-inch Android tablet that is IP68 and MIL-STD-810H, rated to +55 °C, with glove and wet-hand touch, an included S Pen, NFC and a programmable function key for push-to-talk, emergency calls or alarms. ATEX and IECEx certificates and approvals for Brazil, Korea and South Africa make it easy to move between regions, and a camera-free version suits sites that restrict cameras.

The trade-offs are the screen and the working routine: 8 inches at 600 nits with 6 GB of memory, 1,122 g, and charging and battery work outside the hazardous location. ecom states security updates to 2032 (Q1 2032 in our data), a date we show as unconfirmed.

For crews on Division 1 sites whose shift is longer than a battery, the IS940.1 is the pick. i.safe allows it to charge inside the hazardous area, for example on its IS-DS940.1 docking station, and our data records that permission from the IECEx conditions, so check it against the QPS listing for your site. Its NEC 500 listing (QPS LR3081-7) covers Class I Division 1 Groups A to D at T4, Class II Division 1 Groups E, F and G at 155 °C and Class III, with a −20 °C to +55 °C range.

It is intrinsically safe (Ex ib), rated IIC T4 for Zone 1/21 under ATEX and IECEx, with approvals in South Africa, China, Brazil, Japan, India and Korea. The 10.1-inch Android tablet has a 50 MP autofocus camera, 5G, NFC, IP68 and MIL-STD-810H, a programmable red key for lone-worker alarms, and i.safe states security updates until Q4 2032. A mining version, the IS940.M1, is certified for Group I.

Its listing is T4, where the ecom’s is T6, so gases that ignite below 135 °C are outside it. It weighs 1,059 g, runs Android 14, and our data lists no brightness figure for it. Battery swaps are for outside the hazardous location.

  3. Best Windows tablet for Division 1

Eaton MTL GECMA IS Tablet PC

    Eaton · Dedicated Ex tablet

    Certified for
    Zone 1/21
    Marking
II 1GD Ex ia IIC T4 Ga
    Certification
    ATEX + IECEx, Class I Division 1
    Operating system
    Windows 11 IoT Enterprise
    Security updates
    Until October 2034 (unconfirmed)
    Weight
    1430 g

When Division 1 work needs desktop Windows software, the Eaton MTL GECMA IS Tablet PC is the pick. It is intrinsically safe (Ex ia) and runs Windows 11 IoT Enterprise on an x86 Intel processor, so x86 applications run natively, with a 10.1-inch 2560 × 1600 screen, a 49.7 Wh battery and a typical 12 hours according to Eaton. The UL certificate (CER230869) also refers to UL 913 for Class I, II and III Division 1, but our data gives no Class II or III groups, so ask Eaton for the dust listing before relying on it.

Know the gas limit before you specify it. The Class I Division 1 listing covers Groups C and D only, at T4, so it does not cover acetylene (Group A) or hydrogen (Group B), and in North America the gas group is IIB where Europe and IECEx give IIC. If your location handles those gases, the ecom Tab-Ex 05 DZ1 or i.safe MOBILE IS940.1 list Groups A to D.

The rest of the picture: ATEX and IECEx certificates for Zone 1/21, a camera-free version, optional LTE and NFC, 1,430 g and a 540-nit screen. Charging and connections are for safe areas only, and our data lists security updates to October 2034, which is Microsoft’s date for Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024; Eaton does not state the edition year, so treat that as unconfirmed.

  4. Best for scanning on Division 2 sites

II 3G Ex ic op is IIC T4 Gc

    Until December 2031 (unconfirmed)
    Weight
    1074 g

Teams that scan stock, tags and equipment in Division 2 locations will want the ET60/65EX2 Android. Its UL listing covers Class I Division 2 Groups A to D, Class II Division 2 Groups F and G, and Class III Division 2 at T4, with Zone 2 AEx ic IIC T4 Gc. An optional SE55 scan engine is built in, the battery can be hot-swapped through an internal supercapacitor (outside the location), and the 10.1-inch screen runs at 1,000 nits.

The listing applies to the North American types B7-T2E1 and B7-T2E3 only, so order those, and the Zone 22 dust group is IIIB under the NEC and CEC, not the IIIC of the ATEX and IECEx certificates. It is also certified for Zone 2/22 under ATEX and IECEx, rated to +55 °C, takes 1.5 m drops to concrete and adds a 16 MP autofocus camera with flash.

It is a Division 2 tablet, so it is not for Division 1 locations. It ships with Android 14, upgradeable to Android 16 per BARTEC’s datasheet, with updates to December 2031 on Zebra’s date, which BARTEC says needs a LifeGuard service contract. At 1,074 g with an IP64 marking, battery changes and charging happen outside the hazardous location.

  5. Best iPad option for North American sites

    Weight
    990 g (including the tablet)

Fleets on iPad that need a North American listing have one option in our data that is still within Apple’s support, and this is it (the same CSA certificate covers the Atexxo Zone 1 iPad mini 6, whose minimum support ended in September 2026). Atexxo’s CSA certificate (80152658) covers Class I Zone 1 AEx db IIC T4 Gb in the US and Ex db IIC T4 Gb in Canada, and allows the marking Class I Division 2 Groups A to D at T4, with an ambient range of −20 °C to +50 °C and charging at +10 °C to +45 °C. The Xshielder iPad Pro 11-inch has no North American listing.

Inside the flameproof (Ex db) housing is a standard iPad mini (A17 Pro) with an 8.3-inch screen at 500 nits, running iPadOS 27, with a 12 MP rear camera that works through a glass opening in the housing. It is certified for Zone 1/21 under ATEX and IECEx, and an INMETRO approval covers Brazil. At 990 g including the tablet it is light for a Zone 1 iPad, and a blocked-camera (-BC) variant suits sites that restrict cameras.

The listing is for gas only, with no Class II or III dust rating, the dust group is IIIA (combustible flyings), and the temperature class is T4. Touch ID is removed. Security support is shown as Apple’s minimum, October 2029, not an expected end date, and charging is outside the hazardous area only.

How we ranked them

Rank 1 goes to the tablet whose North American certification covers the most hazardous locations: Class I Division 1 (which also covers Division 2) across Groups A to D at the strictest temperature code, Class II Division 1, Class III and the NEC 505 Zone system. The ecom Tab-Ex 05 DZ1 lists Class I Division 1 Groups A to D at T6, Class II Division 1, Class III, and Class I Zone 1 and Zone 21 AEx, while the i.safe Division 1 tablets are T4.

Positions 2 to 5 each name the strongest choice for a different kind of work: long shifts, Windows software, scanning on Division 2 sites and iPad fleets. Division 1 tablets come first because Division 1 equipment can also be used in Division 2, and the last two are picked for work the Division 1 picks do not cover: a built-in scan engine and an iPad. Prices are on request for every brand, so cost does not affect the order. The Xshielder iPad Pro 11-inch has no North American listing, so it does not appear on this page.

The order follows the North American listings, and it would change if a certificate showed another tablet covering more locations. The Eaton MTL GECMA IS Tablet PC’s Division 1 listing covers Groups C and D only, which is why it sits third even though it is a Division 1 tablet.

Every figure comes from certificates, declarations of conformity and manufacturer datasheets, and the same rules apply to every brand. Read how we rate or see the disclosure.

Before you buy

What a Division 1 or 2 tablet must show

Your site’s hazardous area classification decides which of these matter. Confirm it with your safety engineer, then check the North American listing for the exact tablet model.

  • Division and groups

Division 1 equipment can also be used in Division 2, but not the other way round. Check the listed gas groups too: the Eaton MTL GECMA IS Tablet PC covers Groups C and D only, while the ecom Tab-Ex 05 DZ1 and i.safe MOBILE IS940.1 cover A to D.

  • Temperature code

The ecom Tab-Ex 05 DZ1 is listed at T6 (85 °C), while the i.safe, Eaton, BARTEC and Atexxo picks are T4 (135 °C). Choose a code whose limit sits below the ignition temperature of your substances.

  • Dust classes

Class II and III cover combustible dust and fibres. The Atexxo Zone 1 iPad mini 7 listing is gas only, and the BARTEC ET60/65EX2 Android’s Zone 22 dust group is IIIB under the NEC and CEC.

  • The exact type or model

A listing can apply to certain types only: the BARTEC ET60/65EX2 Android’s covers types B7-T2E1 and B7-T2E3. Ask for the listing and check it names the model you will buy.

  • Charging and conditions of use

Most tablets here charge outside the location only. The i.safe MOBILE IS940.1 can charge inside it under its IECEx conditions, so confirm that against your QPS listing and your site’s rules.

FAQ

Division 1 and 2 tablet questions

What is the best tablet for Class I Division 1 and 2 locations?

On North American coverage the ecom Tab-Ex 05 DZ1 ranks first: Class I Division 1 Groups A to D at T6, Class II Division 1, Class III and Zone 1 AEx. For long shifts on Division 1 sites the i.safe MOBILE IS940.1 is the pick, and for Windows software the Eaton MTL GECMA IS Tablet PC, which is listed for Groups C and D only.

What is the difference between Zones and Divisions?

Zones (0, 1 and 2) are used under ATEX and IECEx, while the US and Canada also classify areas as Class I Division 1 or 2. Division 1 roughly matches Zones 0 and 1 together, and Division 2 roughly matches Zone 2. Of our picks, the ecom Tab-Ex 05 DZ1, i.safe MOBILE IS940.1 and Eaton MTL GECMA IS Tablet PC list Division 1, and the BARTEC ET60/65EX2 Android and Atexxo Zone 1 iPad mini 7 list Division 2.

Can a Division 1 tablet be used in a Division 2 location?

Yes. Division 1 equipment is also suitable for Division 2, because Division 1 is the more demanding classification. A tablet listed for Division 2 only, such as the BARTEC ET60/65EX2 Android, is not allowed in Division 1.

Which gas groups does the Eaton tablet’s Division 1 listing cover?

The Eaton MTL GECMA IS Tablet PC’s North American listing covers Class I Division 1 Groups C and D at T4, so it does not cover acetylene (Group A) or hydrogen (Group B). The ecom Tab-Ex 05 DZ1 and i.safe MOBILE IS940.1 are listed for Groups A, B, C and D.

Can an iPad be used in a Class I Division 2 location?

Yes, in a certified case or conversion with a North American listing. The Atexxo Zone 1 iPad mini 7 has a CSA certificate covering Class I Zone 1 AEx db IIC T4 Gb and Class I Division 2 Groups A to D at T4. The Xshielder iPad Pro 11-inch is ATEX only, with no North American listing yet.

Does an ATEX or IECEx certificate cover a North American location?

No. North American locations need an approval or listing under the NEC or CEC, such as the SGS certificate on the ecom Tab-Ex 05 DZ1, the QPS listing on the i.safe MOBILE IS940.1 and the UL listing on the Eaton MTL GECMA IS Tablet PC. Ask for the listing for your exact model.

Facts last verified on against certificates, declarations of conformity and manufacturer data. Always check the certificate for your exact model before use. Spotted an error? Tell us.
