Best tablets for chemical processing in 2026

Chemical plants handle an unusually wide range of substances, and their hazardous areas are layered: Zone 0 inside reactors, vessels and tanks, Zone 1 at charging, sampling and drum-filling points, and Zone 2 around them, with dust zones wherever powders are handled. Hydrogen and acetylene are gas group IIC, most other process chemicals sit within temperature class T4, and carbon disulphide ignites at about 90 °C and needs T6. Operators use a tablet for P&IDs, procedures, batch and shift records and inspection rounds, so beyond the certificate the question is what the tablet lets them do on shift and what conditions its certificate sets for processes that generate static. These are our picks for chemical processing, from the strictest gas and temperature coverage to iPad and Samsung fleets, tanks and vessels, and shift operators.

    Weight
    1122 g

Our number one recommendation for chemical plants is the ecom Tab-Ex 05 DZ1, the tablet to shortlist wherever you handle substances a T4 tablet cannot be used with. It is flameproof (Ex db) with an intrinsically safe (Ex ia) circuit, certified IIC T6 for Zone 1 with dust IIIC T80°C for Zone 21, under ATEX and IECEx. T4 covers most process chemicals, but carbon disulphide ignites at about 90 °C and needs T6, and T6 matters only for substances that ignite below 135 °C. It also holds a North American listing for Class I Division 1, Groups A to D, T6, with approvals in Brazil, Korea and South Africa.

It works as an operator’s tablet too. IP68 and MIL-STD-810H ruggedness suit wash-down and knocks, the 8-inch screen shows procedures and P&IDs, and a programmable function key can be set to push-to-talk, an emergency call or an alarm app. NFC is built in, the S Pen is intrinsically safe for use in the hazardous area, and ecom’s Ident-Ex 02 wireless scanner, Ex-approved for Zone 1/21, adds barcode scanning for drum tracking. A camera-free version is available for areas that restrict cameras; if you plan to scan with the scanner accessory on that version, confirm the pairing with ecom.

It is not certified for Zone 0, which matters inside reactors and vessels. The certificate asks users to keep it away from processes that generate a high electrostatic charge (pneumatic powder transfer is a typical example), and charging is allowed outside the hazardous area only. At 8 inches and 600 nits the screen is small beside the Xshielder’s, there is no LiDAR, it weighs 1,122 g, the battery is not user-replaceable, and ecom states security updates until 2032 (unconfirmed).

    Weight
    1350 g (including the tablet)

For plants that run iPads, the Xshielder iPad Pro 11-inch is the T6 option with the largest screen of our five, for P&IDs, procedures and batch records. The flameproof (Ex db) cover is certified Ex db IIC T6 Gb for gas and Ex tb IIIC T80°C Db for dust, for Zone 1/21 under ATEX, so it covers substances that ignite below 135 °C. The 11-inch, 1,000-nit screen can hold a drawing and a checklist side by side, the M5 chip handles heavy documents, and it works with the same apps and device management as the rest of an iPad fleet.

Xshielder confirms that the 12 MP camera with 4K ProRes video, LiDAR, the Face ID front camera, stylus input and audio all work through the cover, so an operator can photograph a sight glass, a nameplate or a leaking seal and log it in the apps the plant already uses. Security updates are expected for 7–8 years (based on previous iPad Pro support).

It is ATEX only, with no IECEx or North American listing yet, and rated to +45 °C. At 1,350 g it is heavy for a full round, its IP65 rating is pending testing, so we do not rely on it for wash-down, and the battery is not user-replaceable. Our data lists no camera-free version for areas that restrict cameras, and it is not certified for Zone 0.

    Weight
    940 g (including the tablet)

Plants that standardize on Samsung can keep the Galaxy Tab Active5 and its Knox management inside an explosion-proof housing. This Atexxo conversion is flameproof (Ex db) and IIC T6 for gas and IIIC T85°C for dust, certified for Zone 1/21 under both ATEX and IECEx, so it also suits substances that ignite below 135 °C. At 940 g it is the lightest of our five, and the programmable Active Key can be mapped to apps by IT.

The 13 MP rear camera sits behind a toughened-glass opening, the 8-inch, 600-nit touchscreen works under toughened glass, and the side and volume buttons work through the housing. The ambient range is −20 °C to +50 °C. We found no electrostatic-charge condition in our data for it, which is not proof that there is none.

Our data shows no camera-free version, and no North American approval. The January 2029 end date for security updates is Samsung’s date for the standard model, and Atexxo does not say whether it uses the Enterprise Edition, so ask before you plan around it. Charging (with the bottom cover removed) and SIM changes happen in a safe area only, the glass window must be protected from impacts above 2 J, the IP64 rating comes from a single source, and it is not certified for Zone 0.

  4. Best for tank and vessel areas and Windows software

Eaton MTL GECMA IS Tablet PC

    Eaton · Dedicated Ex tablet

    Certified for
    Zone 1/21

    Windows 11 IoT Enterprise
    Security updates
    Until October 2034 (unconfirmed)
    Weight
    1430 g

For areas such as tanks and vessels where the work reaches Zone 0, or where plant software runs only on Windows, the Eaton MTL GECMA IS Tablet PC is the pick. It is intrinsically safe to Ex ia, IIC T4 for gas and IIIC T135°C for dust, certified for Zone 1/21 under ATEX and IECEx, and Zone 0 rated only inside the case supplied by Eaton. It runs Windows 11 IoT Enterprise on an x86 processor, so Windows software runs natively on its 10.1-inch screen, and a camera-free version is offered.

The 49.68 Wh battery gives a typical runtime of 12 hours, NFC is built in, a stylus is supplied, and the range is −20 °C to +55 °C. Its UL certification covers Class I Division 1, but only Groups C and D at T4, so hydrogen and acetylene are outside its North American certificate.

It is T4, so it does not suit the low-ignition substances that put the ecom first. At 1,430 g it is the heaviest of our five, the 540-nit screen is the dimmest that states a figure, and it runs a quad-core Intel Atom (Apollo Lake) processor with 8 GB of memory, against the Xshielder’s Apple M5 with 12 or 16 GB. Eaton does not state which release of Windows 11 IoT Enterprise it ships, so ask for the edition and its support date, and the battery is not user-replaceable.

    Weight
    1059 g

For operators who move between units through a 12-hour shift, the IS940.1 is the tablet that can be charged without leaving the area. Charging in the hazardous area is permitted through its IS-DS940.1 docking station, within the certificate’s limits, including a charging temperature of 0 °C to +45 °C. A freely programmable red key can be set up for SOS or lone-worker alarms, an Ex-rated push-to-talk button is available as an accessory, and the 10.1-inch screen works with gloves.

It is intrinsically safe (Ex ib), IIC T4 and IIIC T135°C for Zone 1/21 under ATEX and IECEx, with a Class I Division 1 listing at T4 for North America. It is IP68, rated to +55 °C, has a 50 MP camera and 5G, and i.safe states security updates until Q4 2032. A mining version, the IS940.M1, is offered. i.safe’s camera-free version is listed by a distributor, not by i.safe, so confirm it if your plant restricts cameras.

T4 suits most process chemicals but not those that ignite below 135 °C, such as carbon disulphide. The certificate asks users to protect it from excessive UV light and high electrostatic charge, which matters in powder-handling areas, and our data holds no brightness figure for the screen. It weighs 1,059 g, it has no LiDAR, and it is not certified for Zone 0.

How we ranked them

Rank 1 goes to the tablet certified for the widest range of substances and regions: the strictest gas group and temperature class for Zone 1 (IIC T6), dust Zone 21 in group IIIC, ATEX and IECEx certificates, a Class I Division 1 listing at T6 and a camera-free version for plants that restrict cameras. T4 covers most process chemicals, but a substance such as carbon disulphide, which ignites at about 90 °C, rules out a T4 tablet, because T4 allows surfaces up to 135 °C and T6 caps them at 85 °C. Four current tablets in our data are certified IIC T6 and IIIC for Zone 1/21: the ecom Tab-Ex 05 DZ1, the Xshielder iPad Pro 11-inch, the Atexxo Zone 1 Galaxy Tab Active5 and the Joy Factory aXtion Extreme iPad mini. The ecom ranks first because it holds the widest set of schemes and offers the camera-free version. The Joy Factory holds an IECEx certificate, but its ATEX certificate is not published, no ambient range is marked (so the standard −20 °C to +40 °C applies) and its 8.3-inch iPad mini screen is smaller than the Xshielder’s, which is why the Xshielder takes the iPad place.

Positions 2 to 5 are the strongest choices for four kinds of plant work: iPad fleets that want the largest screen for P&IDs and procedures, Samsung fleets, tanks and vessels with Windows software, and shift operators who need to charge in the zone. Positions 2 and 3 are T6 as well; positions 4 and 5 are T4, so they suit most process chemicals but not substances such as carbon disulphide. Prices are on request for every brand, so cost does not enter the order, and a Zone 0 rating is not scored in the ranking, though it matters inside reactors and vessels.

The order follows the certificates, and it would change if another maker’s Zone 1 tablet were certified to T6 with a wider set of schemes. The Xshielder’s limits (ATEX only, rated to +45 °C, 1,350 g, IP65 pending testing) are stated in its entry, and they are why the ecom ranks above it.

Every figure comes from certificates, declarations of conformity and manufacturer datasheets, and the same rules apply to every brand. Read how we rate or see the disclosure.

Before you buy

What a chemical processing tablet must show

Your plant’s area classification and the substances on each unit decide which of these matter. Confirm them with your process safety engineer, then read the certificate for your exact model.

  • Substances and temperature class

Compare the ignition temperature of every substance with the class: T4 caps the surface at 135 °C and T6 at 85 °C. Carbon disulphide ignites at about 90 °C and needs T6, which among our picks only the ecom, Xshielder and Atexxo tablets hold; most other process chemicals sit within T4.

  • Gas group

IIC covers hydrogen and acetylene as well as IIB and IIA gases. An IIB tablet does not cover hydrogen or acetylene, so match the group to every substance on the plant. The Eaton’s North American certificate covers Groups C and D only.

  • Zone 0 areas

Reactors, vessels and tanks are often Zone 0 inside. A Zone 1 certificate does not extend to them, and among our picks only the Eaton holds a Zone 0 certificate, and only inside its supplied case.

  • Dust

Polymer, pigment and additive powders create dust zones, and conductive dusts such as carbon black and metal powders need an IIIC rating. All five picks carry IIIC for Zone 21.

  • Electrostatic conditions and cameras

Some certificates ask users to protect the tablet from processes that generate a strong electrostatic charge, and pneumatic powder transfer is a typical example. The ecom and i.safe certificates carry such a condition and the Eaton’s asks users to avoid friction on the enclosure; for the Xshielder and the Atexxo our data lists none, which is not proof that there is none. If your plant restricts cameras, the ecom and the Eaton list camera-free versions.

FAQ

Chemical processing tablet questions

What is the best tablet for chemical processing?

The ecom Tab-Ex 05 DZ1 ranks first because it is certified IIC T6 and IIIC for Zone 1/21 under ATEX and IECEx, the strictest temperature class, which suits substances that ignite below 135 °C such as carbon disulphide, and it adds a Class I Division 1 listing, IP68 and a camera-free version. It is not certified for Zone 0, so for reactors and vessels the Eaton MTL GECMA IS Tablet PC, our only Zone 0 pick, is the one to look at.

What temperature class does a chemical plant tablet need?

T4 covers most process chemicals, but substances that ignite below 135 °C need a stricter class. Carbon disulphide ignites at about 90 °C and needs T6, which among our picks the ecom Tab-Ex 05 DZ1, the Xshielder iPad Pro 11-inch and the Atexxo Zone 1 Galaxy Tab Active5 hold. The Eaton and the i.safe MOBILE IS940.1 are T4.

Which gas group do chemical plants need, IIB or IIC?

Hydrogen and acetylene are IIC, while many solvent vapors are IIB or IIA, so a plant that handles hydrogen needs an IIC tablet. All five of our picks are IIC.

Can I use a tablet inside a reactor or vessel?

Only a tablet certified for Zone 0, and the area’s classification and your site rules decide whether that is allowed. Of our picks, only the Eaton MTL GECMA IS Tablet PC is Zone 0 rated, and only inside the case Eaton supplies; the Zone 1 tablets, including the Xshielder cover, are not.

Do chemical plants need dust-rated tablets?

Where powders are handled, dust zones apply alongside gas zones, and conductive dusts need an IIIC rating. All five of our picks are certified for dust Zone 21 in group IIIC.

Can an iPad be used in a chemical plant?

Yes, in a certified Ex cover or conversion, since a bare iPad has no Ex certificate. The Xshielder iPad Pro 11-inch cover is IIC T6 and certified for Zone 1/21 under ATEX, with no IECEx or North American listing yet, and its IP65 rating is pending testing.
