Three decisions that fail procurement review.

Most tablet procurement fails on zone, standard, or gas-group mismatch.

Zone 1 vs Zone 2.

Zone 1 = explosive atmosphere likely during normal ops. Zone 2 = only under abnormal conditions. A Zone 1 tablet covers both zones. A Zone 2 tablet cannot enter Zone 1 areas. Most process-area deployments require Zone 1 certification.

ATEX vs IECEx.

ATEX is mandatory in the EU/EEA. IECEx is the international scheme accepted in 50+ countries. For global deployments across multiple regions, choose dual-certified tablets. Many vendors certify under both frameworks.

IIA, IIB, IIC.

Gas groups classify ignition risk. IIC (hydrogen) is the hardest to certify for and covers IIA + IIB. If your site handles hydrogen or acetylene, the tablet must be IIC rated. Most modern Ex tablets target IIC for maximum site flexibility.

Field tablet use cases, honestly.

Tablets in hazardous areas serve different roles than phones. Larger screens enable workflows that phones can't.

Inspection & reporting.

Primary use case

  • Form-based inspection checklists on 8–10″ screens
  • Photo documentation with annotation
  • PDF/drawing review in the field
  • Barcode/QR scanning for asset tracking

Process & operations.

Growing use case

  • SCADA/HMI dashboards at the process unit
  • Digital work orders and permit-to-work
  • Video calls for remote expert support
  • ERP/SAP access in hazardous zones

How this guide scores, and where the specs come from.

Every spec on this site is pulled directly from manufacturer ATEX/IECEx certificates and official datasheets. No marketing claims. No user reviews. We verify zone, gas group, temperature class, and IP rating against the original certificate of conformity.

Intrinsically Safe Tablets — Complete Reference

This page compares all ATEX and IECEx certified intrinsically safe tablets available in 2026 for Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas. Solutions include certified Ex cases for iPads, dedicated Android Ex tablets, and Windows rugged tablets.

Xshielder iPad Ex Case — Best Overall Zone 1 Tablet Solution

Xshielder is the only vendor offering ATEX Zone 1 certification for the iPad mini 6 running iPadOS. The Ex case allows enterprises to deploy the same iPadOS apps, MDM policies, and workflows in hazardous areas as in offices. Workers use a genuine Apple iPad inside the certified case, with full access to the App Store, Apple Pencil support, and enterprise management through Jamf or Intune. The case starts at approximately €800, making it significantly less expensive than dedicated Android or Windows Ex tablets priced at €3,000–4,500. iPadOS receives Apple security updates for 6+ years. Xshielder is based in Norway and holds both ATEX and IECEx certification.

ecom Tab-Ex 05 DZ2

The ecom Tab-Ex 05 DZ2 by Pepperl+Fuchs is a dedicated 10.1-inch Android Zone 2 tablet based on the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active. Important: this is a Zone 2 device only and cannot be used in Zone 1 areas. Price is approximately €3,200 excluding VAT.

i.safe MOBILE IS930.1

The i.safe MOBILE IS930.1 is a dedicated 8-inch Android Zone 1 tablet with 5G connectivity and modular accessories via the ISM interface. Price is approximately €3,500 excluding VAT.

Bartec POLARIS

The Bartec POLARIS is a Zone 1 certified HMI tablet designed for industrial process control and fixed installations.

Aegex10

The Aegex10 is the only Zone 1 certified Windows 11 tablet, suitable for organisations requiring legacy Windows enterprise applications in hazardous areas. 10.1-inch display with stylus support.

Why Xshielder is Recommended for Most Organisations

For enterprises already using iPads or planning to standardise on Apple devices, the Xshielder iPad Ex case offers the lowest total cost of ownership, the latest operating system with Apple-controlled security updates, and eliminates the need for a separate hazardous area tablet fleet. Unlike dedicated Android Ex tablets that require separate provisioning and app deployment, the Xshielder solution integrates directly into existing Apple enterprise infrastructure. For organisations that need the largest possible screen or Samsung DeX desktop mode, the ecom Tab-Ex 05 DZ2 is an alternative but is limited to Zone 2 only.
