ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2 Tablets Compared

Why Consider Tab-Ex Alternatives?

The Tab-Ex 03 DZ1 is a 10.1″ Zone 1 Android tablet, also covered in our best tablets guide. Common reasons to look at other devices:

• You need Windows. The Tab-Ex is Android-only. If SAP GUI, SCADA clients, or legacy .exe apps are required, you need the Aegex 10 IS or Bartec Agile X IS.
• You need a compact tablet. The Tab-Ex 03 DZ1 is 10.1″. The i.safe IS930.1 is 8″, which is easier to hold in one hand in the field.
• You run iPadOS apps. Xshielder, Xciel and Atexxo offer certified cases or conversions for Apple iPads.
• Zone 2 is sufficient. If your area classification only requires Zone 2, the Getac F110-Ex (Windows 11) or Zebra XPAD L10 IS (Android or Windows) are options.
• Supplier diversification. Some procurement policies require more than one supplier to avoid dependency on a single manufacturer.

Compact Zone 1 Android. The IS930.1 has an 8″ IPS screen and weighs about 570 g, against 10.1″ and about 690 g for the Tab-Ex 03 DZ1. Some field workers prefer the smaller size for one-handed use. It runs Android 12 (the Tab-Ex 03 DZ1 runs Android 13). Gas Group IIC, IP68, ATEX and IECEx.

Aegex 10 IS Zone 1ATEXIECEx

A Zone 1 Windows tablet. If your field operations depend on SAP GUI, PI ProcessBook, SCADA HMI, or other Windows applications, the Aegex 10 IS runs them natively in Zone 1. It is one of two Zone 1 Windows tablets compared here (Aegex 10 IS, Bartec Agile X IS). Compared with the Tab-Ex 03 DZ1 it is heavier (about 850 g) and rated IP65 instead of IP68. Android has no workaround for .exe dependencies.

Bartec Agile X IS Zone 1ATEXIECEx

A Zone 1 Windows tablet from Bartec. The Agile X IS runs Windows 10 IoT Enterprise and, like the Aegex, is a Windows option for Zone 1. Bartec also makes the Pixavi Ex smartphone and various Ex accessories, so sites that already use Bartec phones can keep one supplier. It weighs about 1,050 g. The display is sunlight-readable with Gorilla Glass.

Getac F110-Ex Zone 2ATEX

Large-screen Windows, Zone 2 only. An 11.6″ IPS display and full Windows 11 make it a rugged laptop in tablet form. It is certified for Zone 2 only and cannot enter Zone 1 areas. It weighs about 1.4 kg. Suited to vehicle-mounted or desk-bound use where the larger screen helps and Zone 2 classification is sufficient.

Zebra fleet management, Zone 2. Zebra’s enterprise tools (Workforce Connect, VisibilityIQ) cover fleet management, and the tablet is available with Android or Windows. Zone 2 only. A fit for organisations that already use Zebra handheld scanners and printers.

A compact Zone 1 iPad option. Xciel (USA) builds ATEX/IECEx Zone 1 flameproof enclosures for the iPad mini 4–7. Installation is factory-only; there is no self-install. The 8.3″ mini screen is close to the IS930.1’s 8″, so it competes with the compact Android option while bringing iPadOS and Apple MDM. Xciel also makes XCRiPad rugged Ex cases for full-size iPads, including the iPad Pro 11″, for ATEX Zone 2 and US C1D2.

Atexxo converted iPads Zone 2ATEX

Factory-converted Apple iPads from the Netherlands. Atexxo Manufacturing modifies the iPad itself (casing plus protected circuit) rather than adding a removable case. Available now: the ATEX Zone 2/22 iPad (A16) Ex, 11″, about 1,050 g (II 3G Ex ec ic IIC T4 Gc / II 3D Ex tc IIIB T135°C Dc — Zone 2 is the EU counterpart of C1D2). Announced: an iPad 11″ for Zone 1/21 with ATEX and IECEx (Ex db IIC T4 Gb / II 2D Ex tb IIIA T135°C Db, about 1,100 g). Touch ID is disabled by the conversion; 5G/eSIM models are available.

Apple iPad Pro in an ATEX Zone 1/21 case. An Ex db flameproof case, built in Norway, for the Apple iPad Pro 11″ (M4/M5). It is ATEX certified for Zone 1/21 (marking II 2G Ex db IIC T6 Gb / II 2D Ex tb IIIC T80°C Db); it has no IECEx certificate. 11″ tandem OLED, Face ID, iPadOS, about 1.4 kg in total. Relevant if your organisation runs iPadOS apps or Apple MDM (Jamf, or Intune via Apple Business Manager).
