Explosion-Proof Tablets in Japan & South Korea

International ATEX and IECEx certified tablets are widely available — but most do not carry the local certifications required in Japan or South Korea. This page explains the gap and what it means for your procurement.

🇯🇵 Japan — JPEx (formerly TIIS) Certification

Japan requires JPEx certification (formerly issued by TIIS, now also by DEKRA) for explosion-proof equipment used in workplaces. While JPEx follows IEC 60079 standards and IECEx certificates can be converted, this is a separate process that most tablet manufacturers have not completed.

Current status: No JPEx-certified tablets available

As of June 2026, we are not aware of any intrinsically safe tablet with JPEx/TIIS certification specifically for the Japanese market. The ATEX/IECEx certified tablets below are available internationally but would require JPEx conversion before legal use in Japanese classified areas.

Note: For smartphones, arkPhone by Arktake Co. offers a Japanese explosion-proof certified iPhone-based device — but no equivalent exists for tablets. The JPEx certificate must be renewed every 3 years.

🇰🇷 South Korea — KCs Ex (KOSHA) Certification

South Korea requires KCs Ex certification issued under KOSHA (Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency) regulations. Testing is performed by KTL, KGS, or KOSHA-accredited bodies. Equipment without a valid KCs Ex mark may not be used in Korean hazardous areas.

Current status: Limited KCs Ex tablet availability

Some manufacturers (notably i.safe MOBILE) list KCs among their certifications. However, most ATEX/IECEx tablet models have not undergone KCs Ex testing. Verify the specific model's KCs certificate number before procurement for Korean sites.

Korea follows IEC standards since 1992, so the technical requirements overlap significantly with IECEx. The gap is primarily administrative — manufacturers need to submit for KCs testing separately.

Available Tablets — International Certification

These tablets hold ATEX and/or IECEx certification and are available worldwide. Check with the manufacturer regarding JPEx or KCs conversion status.
