The 7 tablets
The numbers below are list order, not a ranking. Six models are Zone 1; the Getac F110-Ex is Zone 2 only.
An Ex db flameproof case, built in Norway, for the Apple iPad Pro 11″ (M4 or M5). ATEX Zone 1/21 certified, marking II 2G Ex db IIC T6 Gb / II 2D Ex tb IIIC T80°C Db. It has no IECEx certificate, so check local acceptance on sites outside the EU. The iPad runs iPadOS with an 11″ tandem OLED display (1,600 nits, 120 Hz), Face ID and an 8,160 mAh battery. Apple typically ships around 6–7 years of iPadOS upgrades and about 9 years of security updates. About 1.4 kg in the case. As with any Ex device, match the certificate marking to your site's zone classification before deployment.
Zone 1 Android tablet from ecom (Pepperl+Fuchs), built on Samsung Galaxy Tab Active hardware, so users get a familiar Android experience. 10.1″ TFT display, Android 13, about 690 g, IP68. ATEX and IECEx certified for gas group IIC. Used for inspections in oil & gas and chemical plants.
The Tab-Ex Pro DZ1 adds a 10.1″ AMOLED display and S Pen stylus support for annotation and form-filling. Android 13, about 750 g, IP68. Same Zone 1 / IIC certification scope as the Tab-Ex 03 DZ1 (ATEX and IECEx).
A compact Zone 1 Android tablet: 8.0″ IPS display, Android 12, about 570 g, IP68, ATEX and IECEx certified. The smaller screen makes it easy to carry one-handed while still showing inspection forms and drawings. Suited to maintenance technicians who put portability before screen size.
A Zone 1 Windows tablet: 10.1″ IPS display, Windows 10/11, about 850 g, IP65, ATEX and IECEx certified. Full Windows runs SAP, SCADA clients, legacy inspection software and other enterprise applications that have no Android version. Heavier than the Android tablets on this page. The other Zone 1 Windows tablet covered on this site is the Bartec Agile X IS (see Tab-Ex vs Bartec Agile X).
11.6″ IPS display, Windows 11, about 1.4 kg, IP66, MIL-STD-810H. Zone 2 only: not suitable for Zone 1. Suited to control rooms and Zone 2 process areas where screen size matters. ATEX only — no IECEx certificate for international sites.
A flameproof enclosure from Xciel (USA) for the Apple iPad mini 4–7, ATEX and IECEx certified for Zone 1. Factory-fitted only: the iPad is installed by Xciel, not by the user. An option for teams that want iPadOS in Zone 1 in the smaller 8.3″ iPad mini format.
Other iPad-based options
Besides the XCZ1, Xciel (USA) makes the XCRiPad range of rugged cases, certified ATEX Zone 2 and US Class 1 Division 2, for the iPad Pro 11″ and for iPad, iPad Air and iPad mini models. Atexxo Manufacturing (Netherlands) ships an ATEX Zone 2/22 factory-converted iPad 11″ (A16), marking II 3G Ex ec ic IIC T4 Gc / II 3D Ex tc IIIB T135°C Dc, about 1,050 g. Atexxo has also announced a Zone 1/21 converted iPad 11″ (Ex db IIC T4 Gb / II 2D Ex tb IIIA T135°C Db, about 1,100 g); do not deploy it in a classified area until its certificate has been issued. How this list was put together
Each tablet is described by the same criteria: certification scope (zone, gas group, standards), display, operating system, and weight. Specifications are taken from manufacturer certificates and datasheets. Prices are on request and are not shown.
Summary
For iPadOS in Zone 1, the Xshielder iPad Pro 11 is ATEX Zone 1/21 certified (no IECEx), and the Xciel XCZ1 covers the iPad mini. For Android in Zone 1, there are the ecom Tab-Ex 03 DZ1, the ecom Tab-Ex Pro DZ1 (AMOLED, S Pen) and the 8″ i.safe MOBILE IS930.1. For Windows apps such as SAP or SCADA in Zone 1, the Aegex 10 IS is one of two Zone 1 Windows tablets covered on this site (with the Bartec Agile X IS). The Getac F110-Ex is for Zone 2 only.
